Mobile Applications Development Platforms

Mobile Application Development Platforms sprung as a response to the need to accelerate the pace of development for mobile devices. Popularly known as MADP, the Mobile Application Development Platforms have come to the aid of Enterprises wanting to quickly deliver their enterprise line-of-business applications to an increasingly demanding mobile workforce.

The Gartners 2014 MADP reports the Magic Quadrant for this technology in which it characterises the players into its famous Visionaries, Leaders, Challengers and Niche player quadrants. Three of the platforms that make the grade are described in this article. The Apple and the Google Android platform are excluded from the scope of this article.

Phone Gap – by Adobe
Adobe PhoneGap framework and its open-source version (Apache Cordova), the hybrid wrapping technology are leaders in the MADP sector.
PhoneGap Enterprise provides life cycle support, business user and marketer authoring tools and integrations with other parts of the Marketing Cloud such as Adobe Analytics.
PhoneGap’s hybrid wrapping technology is widely adopted by competitors in the MADP sector and it has to its credit a rich ecosystem of third-party plug-ins and support.
Using familiar technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript associated with choice of frameworks such as Javascript gives a quick start for simple applications.

Titanium by Appcelerator
With a community over 600,000 developers for its free open-source Titanium offering, Appcelerator Platform is a good option for enterprise applications internally and externally facing that require different approaches (hybrid, Web or native) connecting with a robust set of back-end services.
Initially it was built on JavaScript framework that compiled to native Android and iOS applications but it now has cloud-based mobile back-end-as-a-service offering, testing and analytics, which can be leveraged for Appcelerator built apps as also those built with Objective-C on iOS and Java on Android.
Appcelerator Platform is suited for a portfolio of enterprise applications internally and externally facing that require different approaches (hybrid, Web or native) connecting with a robust set of back-end services.

Sencha

This is a leading Web-centric approach to mobile application development. Sencha championed HTML5 and works well with major browsers, especially Javascript. It is available as open source as well as a commercial flavour.

Sencha is an attractive option for enterprises that have Web Application and Javascript expertise or those with exposure to Adobe Flex, Microsoft WPF, Swing or OOPs led development platforms.
